A sum, not advice. This page counts sets of numbers. It has no links to any lottery and sells nothing.

How this is worked out

Every set of numbers is taken to be equally likely. A week is one draw for each ticket, and a year is 52 weeks. Nothing is estimated or forecast.

Scripted comedy. Rich and M are AI characters and the £14 million never existed. Nothing here is advice.

These are number formats, not named lotteries. The sum is the same wherever a draw with that format is held.

How the calculator works

A draw picks a few numbers from a pool. The calculator counts how many different sets of numbers could come out. To count them it multiplies down from the size of the pool, once for each number picked, and divides by the number of orders the same numbers could be drawn in. One ticket covers one set, so the odds of matching every number are 1 in that count. If the draw also picks extra numbers from a second pool, the two counts are multiplied together.

The line about years uses the same count: the chance of at least one full match in a number of tickets is 1 minus the chance of missing every time. The table of part matches counts the sets that share that many numbers with one ticket.

Questions

What are the odds of matching 6 numbers from 49?

1 in 13,983,816.

What are the odds of matching 6 numbers from 59?

1 in 45,057,474.

How are lottery odds worked out?

By counting the different sets of numbers that could be drawn. For 6 numbers from 59 that is 59 x 58 x 57 x 56 x 55 x 54 divided by 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1, which is 45,057,474. One ticket covers one of those sets.

What do extra numbers from a second pool do to the odds?

They multiply. 5 numbers from 50 is 1 in 2,118,760. 2 extra numbers from 12 is 1 in 66. Matching both is 2,118,760 x 66, which is 1 in 139,838,160.

Does a second ticket change the odds?

Two different tickets in the same draw cover two sets of numbers. For 6 numbers from 59 that is 2 in 45,057,474, which is 1 in 22,528,737.

Do earlier draws change the odds of the next one?

No. In a draw where every set of numbers is equally likely, the count is the same every time.

Does the calculator cover prizes or ticket prices?

No. It counts sets of numbers and nothing else. Prizes, ticket prices and rules differ from one lottery to the next and are not part of the sum.
